Baccarat Regulations
Baccarat is bet on with eight decks of cards in a dealing shoe. Cards under 10 are counted at their printed value while at the same time 10, J, Q, K are zero, and A is one. Wagers are made on the ‘banker’, the ‘player’, or for a tie (these aren’t actual people; they simply represent the two hands that are dealt).
Two cards are given to both the ‘banker’ and ‘player’. The score for each hand is the sum of the cards, although the first digit is discarded. For example, a hand of 5 and six has a total of 1 (five plus six = 11; dump the first ‘one’).
A third card can be dealt based on the following rules:
- If the gambler or house gets a score of 8 or nine, both players stay.
- If the gambler has less than 5, he takes a card. Players stays otherwise.
- If the gambler holds, the banker hits on a total lower than five. If the player hits, a chart is used to see if the banker stays or takes a card.

The greater of the two totals wins. Winning bets on the bank pay out nineteen to Twenty (even money less a 5% rake. Winning wagers for tie usually pays out at eight to one but on occasion 9:1. (This is a bad bet as ties happen less than 1 in every ten hands. Avoid betting on a tie.
